a photo of mum

I just want to share a little bit on what I learned over the past few years after I made photography part of  my never ending list of hobbies.

In 2004, I visited Sydney with my mum. I brought my DSLR along and took some images along the way. I kinda like what the power of a camera gives me. It allows me to draw a picture just with a click of a button. No pencils, no crayons, no pastels and no mess. Having it in digital is even better. Everything can be done in the comfort of an air conditioned room and a comfy chair. During the trip, I took some images of my mum while we went traveling. This is one image that I love (even though her eyes was closed).

I came back alone while mum stayed with my sister for another month. Back in Singapore, I quickly ran through the images I took in Sydney and started edited them. I’d always put the portraits last, since to me, it was the least important (at least during that time). Days later, I started to work on some of the portraitures. Going through the images of my mum nearly made me tear. It was only during the editing process, that I realized how much she has aged. It has never occured to me that age is catching up with her. Perhaps seeing her everyday just made me took things for granted. But at that very point, I felt really bad. Guilty. Not because of how much she has aged, but my failure to notice.

I could go on and on on this topic. But I’d just say, looking back at the images, I really enjoyed that holiday. I hope I can go on another one with her again.

It’s never too late to start appreciating the people around you. Yes, they can be annoying at times. If it helps, dig out some photos of the happier days.

grey

One man’s meat is another man’s poison. In this part of the world that I live in, there is almost zero chance of us having a foggy day (note: foggy != hazy). When I was in Germany in 2005, I was totally mesmerized by the fog that blanketed the entire town one morning. To me, it was surreal and beautiful. But when I reach the office, I heard more people complaining about the fog than being fascinated by it. Same goes for snow.

That was my last day in Germany. When I woke up and saw the fog, I skipped breakfast and rushed towards the old town. Managed to enjoy that beautiful scene and took some images before heading for office, 30 mins late.

Sun setting into the sea

At least it looks like it.

I love taking pictures from the plane. I will always request for window seats, since I only need to go to the toilet once every 12 hours (on flight… oh yes, I think my body has a “flight mode”) and I don’t have the habit of chatting up the stewardess:)

spook me

Finally finally cleared majority of my work. The annual thunderstorm season is back. It feels a little wierd trying to fall asleep while thinking that someone is “taking pictures” of you. Those darn flashlights!:P Today is admin day again. I hate admin days. It’s not very funny to go through zillions of receipts and invoices. In an ideal world, everything should be free, so we can do away with this admin stuff right? Ok wait, I’m not suggesting anything:D Well, actually I am… I want a free MINI:D

Browsing browsing through tons of images. Going to get my personal images up soon. One of those that didn’t make the first cut. I’d say, one of those that got away.

This was taken during my first trip to Germany (when I was still working as an engineer). I was posted to Wetzlar aka Leica-town. According to my colleagues then, they say it’s a dead town. People vanish off the streets after 5pm. True enough, the entire town is not much bigger than junction 8 (ok, maybe 2 junction 8s). Armed with my camera, I was so determined to take images of snowscapes that I braved the subzero temperatures and stood out there for hours, trying to get something decent. This is the bridge that connects the old town to the new. The old town still have some very well preserved half-timbered houses. Feels a little scary walking there alone at night. Somewhat like Dracula-town.

Amazing clouds

Did anyone see the amazing sunset today? Beauty beyond words. I saw a dragon and a phoenix dancing in the skies. These are the days where you wish you had your camera ready. The formation of clouds seem to tell me something, kinda like some information or reminder.

Finished one set of photos tonight. Feeling pretty good. Can’t wait to show it to the couple.

Oh yes, an overseas shoot is in the pipeline. Try to work it out over the next week. We are shooting in Antartica with the penguins and killer whales! Nah, just kidding, somewhere nearer:P

Didn’t take any pictures today. This is something from 2005. The candy floss skies.

last one standing

I went again the following week, it was no longer there. To a “better cause” I hope.

One tree

One scene, so many interpretations. One encounter, so many possibilities.

earth spirits

Migration can be a pain. I’m talking about migration of images to different harddisks. While doing them, I found some images that I took in 2005. I used to go out alone to places like this. It wasn’t planned, but I when I saw this, I stopped my car immediately and decided that “conquer” it. “Conquering” comes with a price. Climbed down a drain, bashed through the bushes and got myself stuck in knee deep mud. I was rewarded with a beautiful sunset that day and sceneries that I’ve never seen in Singapore. Then, I realized the sun was my only source of light.

With my mobile phone’s dying light, I tracked back the same mud and bush, nearly getting lost. Sometimes, we learn the harder way. But it’s all worth it:)

I went home and told my parents about my “findings”. I always love the stories my parents tell me. Superstitious or not, I don’t care. It adds color to my imagination. This is what they told me.

Every forest has some demigods guarding them. As civilization takes over, these spirits have to leave. However, just like everyone else, they’ll need some notice period before moving out. Therefore, the tree is left untouched, until the notice is served.
