Camping under the stars

Taken right after dinner. I was terribly hungry after the almost 9 hour hike up base camp at 2600m. Muscles that I never knew I had cramped up and legs went jelly. That night, I requested for double the serving of dinner and finished them in half the time. That was when I heard someone outside saying ‘look at the stars!’. I crawled out of my tent and quietly went ‘wow…’.

Stargazing in the rainforest

Due to a change of plans, we camped under the canopy of trees instead of the edge of the crater, overlooking the lake. But that didn’t dampen our spirits as most of us came out to enjoy the last night out in the wild with a round of Bintang for everyone. When I looked up, the Milky Way was just right there, in the middle of the opening.

This is where I want to climb

Taken at pre dawn on my last day on Gili Trawangan. For some reason, I woke up on my own at 5am and decided I should take a walk and perhaps catch the sunrise. When the first light hit the peak of Mount Rinjani, it brought back the days old memories when I was up there, watching the sunrise from the slopes. It was beautiful.

…and this is where I climbed.

Recce and city scoot-about

It’s been awhile since I last did a recce on locations. I took the afternoon off and went off the parks with my Xootr. It was quite a workout but I had to burn off that two plates of char kway teow from Beach road:D Anyway, I decided to roam around the bay area since I had my Xootr with me and the terrain is pretty flat. Here are two images from the scoot-about:)

Cuts like a knife. But silly me, missed the tip by a little.

The heart of the city – what lies beneath.

Harlequin

One of the prettiest shrimps underwater. This one is really tiny, maybe a centimeter and the half.

An unplugged week

It’s been almost a week of scrappy internet access on the island of Ambon. The microwave signals were severely hampered by cloudy skies and rainy weather in the evenings. On our very last day, the skies cleared up and with that, we witnessed a moon rise from the water horizon. It was a pretty awesome sight. That was when I realized the skies are really clear and the tide was incredibly low. I decided that I should take the land pictures that I have been waiting for all week. This huge tree trunk was washed down from the hills, down the river and somehow ended up on the beach of the resort. It had since became a favorite photography spot for visitors.

This week had been pretty awesome with great dives, great company and life pretty much unplugged. But like all awesome holidays, it comes with some unexpected and ‘memorable’ experiences as well. Got seasick once, puked like mad. Housing flooded twice (thankfully I surfaced before things got really bad and found out the culprit was a faulty dome port). Jellyfish stings (oh, those things are really beautiful… and as with beautiful things, keep a distance). Camera shutter kind of died, so I had to wait about 10-15 seconds between shots for the error message to clear. It’s a real pain but I learned to slow down and pick my shot instead of spraying. On some dives, at depths below 15m, some of the buttons on the camera refused to work for some reason. So it was like shooting manual on film because the playback button and focus button didn’t work. Despite all these, it was still an awesome trip.

My second attempt on the Milky Way

This is my 3rd post on Milky Way seen from Singapore. Two days after my first attempt, I went back to the same location again to get a more accurate framing of milky way. I did some research online and made sure I read the constellation correctly as they are the only indicators of where I will be shooting. It was an extremely clear night except we were half way into full moon phase but surprisingly that did not cause too much problems. This time round I spent more time reading the stars (literally) and aligning my shot. This is the final shot after applying some trial and error photoshop magic. Taken with a single exposure. Pretty pleased with the result and probably will make a print when I’m back from my trip.

Presenting… the Milky Way

Well, I caught part of it:D

After a good morning’s sleep, I spent some time working on the images I took last night and managed to pull out the details of the milky way. I managed to capture the tail of Scorpius but I think I just caught the brightest bit of the Milky way at the edge there. Now that I understand a little more about the constellation, the next shoot should yield better results. So it’s proven, it is definitely possible to shoot the Milky Way in light polluted Singapore. The place I was at was not exactly super dark either. Many thanks to the photographers who did this before me that inspired my late night search for… milk:)

About this image, it was shot in a single exposure with 3 frames stitched together for a wider angle.
